Tiny seahorse threatened by Gulf oil spill

CBC -- As tens of thousands of dwarf seahorses flounder in the oil-infused Gulf of Mexico, a University of British Columbia researcher says their plight is a cautionary tale in the debate over permitting Big Oil's tentacles on the West Coast.

The tiny creature is under threat of extinction after the massive BP oil spill last April, and isn't being helped by abrasive cleanup methods underway, said Amanda Vincent, director of the international Project Seahorse conservation group.

Maybe some day we'll learn from the mistakes of others that resulted in the disasters in Santa Barbara, Prince William Sound, and the Gulf of Mexico off New Orleans.

People don't take this sort of thing very serious anymore. Most reports like this are bogus -- like the "Snail Darter" scare several years ago. Millions of dollars were wasted trying to save what become known as "Carter's Darter" but later studies showed the little darter was never in any danger, that they were everywhere and millions of them...and it was just another story created to make grants and money avilable for people who study and live off these things ....the ones who cry wolf all the time.

Unfortunately, this is just one symptom of a much greater and very serious problem. If you take the time to study the web of life, many of the tiny creatures make life possible for the rest of US. That is simply how it works. Just keeping your head where the sun does not shine is not the solution when it comes to dire consequences from irresponsible behavior.

FROM THE ARTICLE:

"Imagine if you took one of our lovely wilder meadows and you threw a sheen of oil over it and then you decided to burn it and then you decided to throw chemicals on to try and get rid of the oil," she said.

Dwarf seahorses, already vulnerable because of their 2.5-centimetre size, were in the height of breeding when the well blew up in the Gulf, Vincent said.

The impact of oil toxins was fierce because they have highly structured social lives and live in small, patchy populations that can't migrate long distances. Males, who actually carry the offspring, only produce a small number of young.

>> ?? flounder ?? just for the halibut; how do tentacles get involved in this fishy story? The Gulf of Mejico has been infused with oil since the Mississippi river flowed into it; Maybe it's too late to help all the dwarf fishies; but how many human beings in each of your towns could benefit from the money the Seawhores group is diverting?

Quite true, jedinthesh. However, it's typical for the smallest creatures to be the most vulnerable to such pollution contamination. And since the big creatures generally feed off the smaller ones, it's a matter of time that the food chain is lost.

I am sure the dwarf seahorse is not the only creature that has been affected.

It still amazes me that we spend all this money on space but not nearly as much on ocean exploration. We still don't even know how our Earth works, especially the oceans.
