Canada launches probe into Toyota safety concerns

FORBES.COM -- By CHARMAINE NORONHA

TORONTO -- Canadian politicians on Thursday accused the nation's transportation agency of failing to take swift action after receiving acceleration-related complaints in Toyota vehicles three years before the company began a series of safety recalls.

Excerpts

The Parliamentary committee probe is part of a larger investigation by the government into the recall of 270,000 Toyota vehicles in Canada.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has tied 52 deaths to crashes allegedly caused by the accelerator problems, and the agency has received new complaints from owners who had their cars fixed and said their vehicles suddenly accelerated afterward.

Toyota Canada president Yoichi Tomihara and managing director Stephen Beatty are scheduled to testify

The government is always behind big business or big labor. The average joe is lost in the process until and unless the money grubbing politicians feel their gravey train is in danger and then they pretend to be on our side. Only around election day do they think of us as voters, the rest of the time we are just problems.

I don't think that there's any doubt that our government, as well as the Canadian government, knew about Toyota's problem long before the public did. The problem is that Toyota still doesn't want to say that their problems could possibly be worse than they originally thought. I understand why... it's because it's going to be very expensive to say that we have electrical problems- though, it could possibly be just as expensive not to admit it.

NHTSA was complicit with Toyota in the cover-up and stonewalling. Let's hope they have learned a lesson and get tough with safety issues that kill!!

I am on my second Toyota vehicle and am quite happy with it. I will buy Toyota again. Many companies have been in the same position at one time or another and people are still buying their cars. Toyota has my support!

And Canada is doing this now?! If it weren't for the Americans that had their hearings and committees, Canada would still be in the dark about this whole situation, heck it would not even know there was a situation!

I think that Toyota is telling the truth that there is nothing wrong with their electronics. A friend of mine has a Toyota Sienna and its air bag light was flashing. He found that the passenger seat side was the common incident while surfing the Internet. Then he went and disconnected the electrical connectors under the passenger seat and reconnected them. The flashing light went away and the problem was solved.

In light of this, it seems to me that the Japanese connectors are not the same as American made connectors. We tend to make them more reliable under corrosive conditions, like salt in the winter. The Japanese do not and it is possible that the connector became oxidized and produced a slight electrical resistance. Now if they made the gas pedal to accelerate when it senses more resistance, how much more resistance will be added to the circuit when a connector becomes resistive instantly. Perhaps Toyota should invert the circuit to sense less resistance as accelerating and problem may be solved when the connectors become resistant. It will slow the car down but at least the driver will be able to pull over and stop the car (another life saved).
