BP spreads blame for Gulf spill

CBC -- BP says a "sequence of failures" involving "multiple companies" led to the explosion and fire that killed 11 people and caused a massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

In a 193-page report released Wednesday and posted on its website, the company said the accident arose from “a complex and interlinked series of mechanical failures, human judgments, engineering design, operational implementation and team interfaces.”

The internal report was prepared by a team led by BP's head of safety and operations, Mark Bly.

The April 20 explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon rig led to the leak of millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf became the worst ecological disaster in the United States in recent memory.

BP's report will likely lay the foundation for its legal defence in future

As long as BP has money in the bank they'll continue to point fingers to draw away from their responsibilities.

Did anyone really expect BP to take responsibility for their well?

BP has a fairly long history of cutting corners, resulting in the death of American workers and environmental damage. It is their well and they must take 100% responsibility for all damage. If they think they can prove any of their subcontractors are partially responsible, they can try to recover some of the damages later in civil court.

Four months to produce a child-like "but mom, they did it too!" list of excuses?

Let's see. Who's engineering design is British Petroleum questioning - their own?

Who's maintenance (or should I say, lack thereof) is British Petroleum questioning - their own?

Who's judgement (decision making) is British Petroleum questioning - their own?

Who's operational implementation (i.e. who called the shots) is British Petroleum questioning - their own?

Oh, it was everyone else's fault..?

Right.

The design of the well was British Petroleum's. As leasee of the drilling rig, maintenance was British Petroleum's responsibility. As has repeatedly come-out in the worker testimony, the decision making was British Petroleum's. And lastly, the operational implementation throughout the course of drilling the well was British Petroleum's.

"The internal report was prepared by a team led by BP's head of safety and operations, Mark Bly.'

Would any other result be expected from BP's own report?

As long as you contract out work and have employees, you can always shift the blame.

Bluehawk43 - They'd never blame the government regulators because they've spend millions making sure the government doesn't regulate. Deregulate and drill baby drill, dontcha know.

Pathetic! BP builds a bomb, lights the fuse then blames the contractors for allowing the bomb to explode. DC Politicians - 11 people dead and the perps are your campaign contributors. Let's see who's willing to walk the "tough on crime" walk now.

Taking full responsibility? Why should they. As long as they find someone else they can blame. Nice example they are setting.

Let the finger pointing begin!

Corporations claim outsourcing, like what BP does with the oil rigs, is cost effective. Clearly, the cost efficiency of blaming the other guy when things go wrong is built into the system. Only when the laws are passed that stipulate that the blame for mishaps must be shared in large part by the parent corporation as part of its fiduciary duty to check these contractors out. The corporations then can go back and sue the contractors if the problem was big enough.

That will stop this shiftless dodging of responsibility.

Oh, I totally disagree that it's the government's job to oversee corporations to stop them from screwing themselves. Governmental regulations are there to safeguard human lives, much like the laws of our state. Just like I would disagree that it's the job of the police to stop crimes from happening before they happen (that is, it's our duty to follow the law proactively), it's the corporations job to follow the laws that safeguard our health and its long-term financial interests.

I can't believe they omitted one of the biggest failures and that is our own government's lack of oversight as directed in regulations.

193 pages - just like the pages sprewed out by the Supreme Court. When they render a verdict, they can write pages about what they did.
Why???
I'm sure BP could say it in 5 pages or less.
It's just a way to bury info, because no one wants to go through ALL those pages - you'd fall asleep.

Since BP wrote this = they will pass the blame along and be very careful what they wrote since various lawyers reviewing it for pending and future lawsuits.

I wonder if they'll take the blame for all the corner cutting they did? Or is 11 lives lost and millions of gallons of crude spilled just the price of doing business?
